When it comes to a collision between a train and just about any other vehicle in the world, the likelihood is that the train is intact and the other vehicle has been destroyed and its occupants are either dead or very seriously injured. Train usage has increased over the past few years - and so, too, have train accidents. Here in New Mexico, we have seen the increase in train accidents involving the Rail Runner. Unfortunately, we anticipate more accidents as train use continues to grow.
Train accidents occur because of four main causes:
- Human Error
- Tracks and Structures
- Railroad Equipment
- Signal and Train Control
Reports from a recent five-year study show that a big majority of railroad accidents resulted from human error or track causes.
Federal statistics show there were 851 railroad fatalities and nearly 9,000 non-fatal accidents in 2007. In fact, drivers are 30 times more likely to die in a railway crossing accident than in other car accidents. Federal records show 2,749 highway-rail incidents in 2007.
